On May 18th Wild Tomorrow Fund was proud to release six giraffe onto their Ukuwela conservancy in South Africa.

When baby giraffe Msituni was born in February, veterinarians at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park discovered that the little giraffe suffered from a range of ailments, including hyper-extended joints. The Hanger Clinic, a group specializing in building orthotics for humans, performed two procedures to fabricate a mold of Msituni’s leg and create a custom stainless steel brace. There are less than 2,000 Kordofan giraffe remaining in the wild. This subspecies of the Northern giraffe was added to the IUCN Red List as 'Critically Endangered' in late 2018. GCF is working with the government of Chad and African Parks to secure a future for Kordofan giraffe in Zakouma National Park in Chad. Hundreds of hours and thousands of crackers went into teaching Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden’s giraffes to participate in their own hoof care. Learn more about the Giraffe Centre at 🤍 The Africa Fund for Endangered Wildlife (A.F.E.W.) Kenya was founded in 1979 by the late Jock Leslie-Melville, a Kenyan citizen of British descent, and his American-born wife, Betty Leslie-Melville. They began the Giraffe Centre after discovering the sad plight of the Rothschild Giraffe. A subspecies of the giraffe found only in the grasslands of East Africa. The Giraffe Centre has also become world-famous as a Nature Education Centre, educating thousands of Kenyan school children every year. At the time, the animals had lost their habitat in Western Kenya, with only 130 of them left on the 18,000-acre Soy Ranch that was being sub-divided to resettle squatters. Their first effort to save the subspecies was to bring two young giraffes, Daisy and Marlon, to their home in the Lang’ata suburb, southwest of Nairobi. Here they raised the calves and started a programme of breeding giraffe in captivity. This is where the centre remains to date. Betty and Jock then registered A.F.E.W. in the United States. Funds were raised to move five other groups of giraffe to different safe areas. Breeding herds of 26 giraffes were translocated from Soy Ranch to the Ruma Game Reserve in present-day Homa Bay County, Lake Nakuru National Park in Nakuru and Nasolot Game Reserve in modern-day West Pokot County. In 1985, seven giraffes were introduced to Yodder Flower Farm near the Mwea Game Reserve in Mbeere District in Eastern Kenya. In 1983, funds raised by A.F.E.W. USA helped build the Educational Centre on a 60-acre sanctuary. This with the extraordinary vision of creating an educational institution in conjunction with rescuing the giraffe. The Giraffe Centre opened its doors to the general public and students the same year, receiving over 800 excited students. There are now over 300 Rothschild Giraffe safe and breeding well in various Kenyan national parks. Recent herds have been introduced to Soysambu Ranch by Lake Elementaita in the Great Rift Valley, Kigio Conservancy and the Sergoit Ranch in the Mount Elgon region. HISTORY OF THE DAVID SHELDRICK ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE Born from one family’s passion for Kenya and its wilderness, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust was established 45 years ago and is best known for its Orphans' Project, the first and most successful elephant orphan rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. The number of Africa's iconic giraffes has plummeted dramatically in the past three decades—by up to 40%. Some refer to this as a “silent extinction” because it’s been such a slow decline that it’s almost gone unnoticed. IFAW and other conservationists are working hard to keep giraffes safe, which requires a trained and well-equipped ranger force including national park rangers, members of local communities, and law enforcement officers. A perfect example of this on-the-ground work with local partners happened on August 2, 2019, when IFAW-supported Olgulului Community Wildlife Rangers and Kenya Wildlife Service participated in a dramatic rescue of a female giraffe in Amboseli National Park. With a modified spear protruding from her abdomen, the giraffe was the likely survivor of a failed poaching attempt. Luckily, the team was able to safely sedate the giraffe and carefully remove the spear. The injury, although serious, was deemed to be non-life-threatening. There are only 111,000 giraffes left in Africa, a drop of 30% in 30 years. From their base in Namibia, Giraffe Conservation Foundation currently works with local and international partners in 15 African countries to save giraffes in their natural habitat, using methods like translocation and training local “giraffe guards” to track their movement. Zakouma National Park in Chad is one of Africa’s most astounding tales of resurgence and hope – it is also a last stronghold for the Critically Endangered Kordofan giraffe, supporting about 60% of the 2,000 that remain in the wild across their range in Africa. In January this year, African Parks worked alongside the Giraffe Conservation Foundation to undertake the first-ever giraffe satellite tagging operation in Chad, collaring eight of these animals to better monitor their activity and improve their conservation. Africa’s total Kordofan giraffe population declined by 90% over the last 30 years, but in Zakouma their numbers are rising and we remain committed to their continued protection. Through our partnership with the Chadian Government since 2010, we have overhauled law enforcement and worked extensively with communities to restore security to the landscape. Zakouma has since transformed into a safe haven where wildlife numbers are increasing for the first time in decades, people are visiting and communities are benefitting from stability and new economic opportunities in living proof that where safe places can be created, both people and wildlife can thrive.
A CCTV footage captured the birth of an endangered baby giraffe - just six weeks after his brother's arrival. The baby Rothschild's giraffe called Kris arrived into the world with a bump after falling several metres to the ground at West Midlands Safari Park. Angela Potter, head of wildlife, said, “We are so delighted to welcome another giraffe calf into our herd, just six weeks since Kingsley was born, and it is going to be lovely to see the two calves growing up together." When young male giraffe practice necking, it almost looks like dancing. This footage was filmed at Riguiek Pan in Zakouma National Park, Chad, by the Kordofan Giraffe Project. Zakouma NP is home to over 60% of the world's population of Kordofan giraffe and they are considered 'Critically endangered' on the IUCN RedList. As part of our continent-wide initiative Twiga Tracker, we recently GPS tagged giraffe in the Save Valley Conservancy in Zimbabwe. Twiga Tracker is the largest giraffe GPS satellite tracking programme ever in Africa (‘twiga’ is Swahili for giraffe).
