Small project I made which compares OpenCL to normal coding methods. CPU default version makes use of OpenMP for threading and a SIMD optimised vector class CPU OpenCL was marginally faster, but it shines with the GPU. Even the weak ATI HD 5145 which can barely play games can out perform the CPU massively!

Dave Airlie 🤍 CUDA has become the defacto standard for GPU compute in most fields. AI and Machine Learning via projects like tensorflow are all targeting CUDA as their runtime. CUDA however as one major flaw, it's closed source and requires closed source drivers. This talk will explore the current state of non-CUDA compute stacks, concentrating on the OpenCL, SPIR-V and SYCL projects from Khronos, but also touching on Vulkan compute and other possibilities. It will discuss the some possible problems with AMD ROCm and Intel OpenCL drivers from a Linux platform point of view and try to scope out what a vendor-neutral Linux focused compute stack might look like that has maximal code sharing across vendors and doesn't require shipping various vendor forks of LLVM. linux.conf.au is a conference about the Linux operating system, and all aspects of the thriving ecosystem of Free and Open Source Software that has grown up around it. General Purpose Computing on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU) allows you to make use of your video card (GPU) to perform general purpose computing. The typical GPU contains hundreds of cores capable of performing mathematically intense operations. However, harnessing the power of the GPU is much different than the traditional CPU programming that most programmers are used to. This presentation will show how to make use of the GPU from Java using OpenCL. OpenCL abstracts the differences between competing GPU architectures. GPU's are not suited to every task, so the criteria for a good GPU task will be reviewed. To demonstrate the power of the GPU in Java I will show how to use the GPU to speed a Big Data process over a large volume of financial data. This can greatly speed up certain data mining and predictive Modeling applications. I will also show how GPU's can be used in an Amazon EC2 cluster.

This simulation is a project I created in order to learn how to write code for the GPU. I used OpenCL to leverage the general purpose computing power of my GTX 660 TI. Compared to the CPU version, the GPU version runs a staggering 73X faster. I am writing a technical piece on the simulation and how I ported it from the CPU to GPU.
