Khalistan movement The Khalistan movement is a separatist movement seeking to create a homeland for Sikhs by establishing a sovereign state called Khalistan in the Punjab region. The proposed state would consist of the territory which currently encompasses before 1966 East Punjab Province of India, and Punjab, Pakistan, with Lahore as its capital. Since the movement gathered force in the 1980s, the territorial ambitions of Khalistan have at times included Chandigarh; sections of North India, including the whole of Indian Punjab; and some parts of the western states of India. Prime Minister of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, according to Jagjit Singh Chohan, had proposed all out help to create Khalistan during his talks with Chohan, following the conclusion of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The call for a separate Sikh state began in the wake of the fall of the British Empire. In 1940, the first explicit call for Khalistan was made in a pamphlet titled "Khalistan". With financial and political support of the Sikh diaspora, the movement flourished in the Indian state of Punjab – which has a Sikh-majority population – continuing through the 1970s and 1980s, and reaching its zenith in the late 1980s. In the 1990s, the insurgency petered out, and the movement failed to reach its objective for multiple reasons including a heavy police crackdown on separatists, factional infighting, and disillusionment from the Sikh population. There is some support within India and the Sikh diaspora, with yearly demonstrations in protest of those killed during Operation Blue Star. In early 2018, some militant groups were arrested by police in Punjab, India. Former Chief Minister of Punjab Amarinder Singh claimed that the recent extremism is backed by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and "Khalistani sympathisers" in Canada, Italy, and the UK. Simranjit Singh Mann, elected in 2022 from Sangrur, is currently the only openly Khalistani MP in the Indian Parliament and his party, Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), is currently the only pro-Khalistan party in the Indian parliament. Who is Amritpal Singh? Not much is known about Singh's early years. A resident of Jallupur Khera in Punjab's Amritsar district, he moved to Dubai in 2012 to join his family's transport business. His LinkedIn profile says he has a mechanical engineering degree from a university in Punjab and that he worked as an "operational manager" at a cargo company. For many years, reports say, his popularity was restricted to social media where his views on Sikh unity and statehood found plenty of resonance. In August last year, he travelled to India from Dubai, looking visibly different from old photos in which his hair and beard were neatly trimmed. A month later, Singh was appointed head of Waris Punjab De (Heirs of Punjab), an organisation formed by Deep Sidhu, an actor and activist who was arrested in connection with violence during a protest held by farmers - he died in a car accident last year. The ceremony, which was attended by thousands of people, was held in Rode, the ancestral village of Bhindranwale. Leon Trotsky : Lev Davidovich Bronstein better known as Leon Trotsky was a Russian revolutionary, political theorist and Soviet politician. Ideologically a Marxist, his developments to the ideology are called Trotskyism. Born to a wealthy Jewish family in Yanovka (now Bereslavka, Ukraine), Trotsky embraced Marxism after moving to Nikolayev in 1896. In 1898, he was arrested for revolutionary activities and subsequently exiled to Siberia. He escaped from Siberia in 1902 and moved to London, where he befriended Vladimir Lenin. In 1903, he sided with Julius Martov's Mensheviks against Lenin's Bolsheviks during the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party's initial organisational split. Trotsky helped organize the failed Russian Revolution of 1905, after which he was again arrested and exiled to Siberia. He once again escaped, and spent the following 10 years working in Britain, Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain, and the United States. After the 1917 February Revolution brought an end to the Tsarist monarchy, Trotsky returned from New York via Canada to Russia and became a leader in the Bolshevik faction. As chairman of the Petrograd Soviet, he played a key role in the October Revolution of November 1917 that overthrew the new Provisional Government. What's Delhi Liquor Scam? Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has been arrested by the CBI in connection with the capital's now-scrapped liquor sales policy, thrusting the case into the spotlight once again. The investigation relates to the now-withdrawn Delhi liquor sales policy introduced in 2021. Manish Sisodia is the head of Delhi's excise department, which is how he has come into the line of fire. Under the policy, in a departure from norms in most states, the government no longer had anything to do with selling liquor and allowed only private shops to do so. The central aim was to stop black marketing, increase revenue and improve the consumer experience. It also allowed the home delivery of liquor and shops to stay open till 3 am. Licensees could also offer unlimited discounts. The government reported a substantial 27 per cent increase in income from the policy, generating around ₹ 8,900 crore. However, the reforms soon ran into trouble, first with the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police, which reports to the BJP-led government at the centre. Then, with Delhi's new Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, also a representative of the central government. Citing a report from Delhi's top bureaucrat which accused Mr Sisodia of bending rules and providing undue benefits to liquor vend licensees, Mr Saxena asked for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. Not long after, Manish Sisodia said the policy was going to be cancelled because the BJP was using the investigating agencies it controls to intimidate vendors. He also blamed Mr Saxena's predecessor Anil Baijal for a "last-minute change" that crippled the reforms. Until his arrest today, Mr Sisodia had not been named in the chargesheet filed by the agency. But last year, the CBI raided 31 locations, including his home. The agency did not find anything incriminating, the minister said - a stand not challenged by the agency. Separately, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) also launched a probe into the Delhi liquor scam, alleging money laundering, and claimed a liquor lobby dubbed the "South Group" paid at least ₹ 100 crore in kickbacks to AAP for its Goa election campaign via one of the arrested businessmen. The ED widened the scope of the probe, going as far as to implicate K Kavitha, daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, another strident critic of the BJP, and arresting her former accountant. It claimed the policy caused a ₹ 2,800 crore loss to the government. The AAP has dismissed all charges and said the investigation is the BJP's attempt to settle political scores. However, it has maintained that it will cooperate with investigators. Party boss and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said, "There is no such thing as a liquor scam.
