Let me know your faves! Energy bar recipe: 350g oats 120g light brown sugar 3 tbsp maple syrup 2 tbsp jam A few handfuls of frozen mixed berries A small dash of apple & mango juice Mix all the ingredients in a bowl (except for the frozen berries). You want the mixture to come together but not be runny at all. Just enough moisture to bind the ingredients. Then place 2/3 of the mixture into a lined baking dish. Add a layer of frozen berries and then use the remainder of the mixture to cover the top. Press down so it's flat. Then bake in the oven at 200C until golden brown. Normally around 30 minutes. In this animation you'll learn about Nutrient Cycling and the interactions that happen between soil microorganisms and plants! ✅ Find out more about Soil Food Web 👉 🤍 When the Soil Food Web is balanced, plants can harness the power of soil microbes to get all of the nutrients that they need from the soil. During photosynthesis, plants produce simple sugars and carbohydrates. The plants invest some of this sugar and carb energy into the soil by way of their roots to feed bacteria and fungi. These organisms extract nutrients from organic matter and from the soil particles - think grains of sand. However, it’s not until nematodes and protozoa arrive in the root zone to eat the bacteria and fungi that the nutrients are released in a plant-accessible form. The results are well-nourished, resilient plants that continue this nutrient cycle without the need for chemical inputs. Subscribe to GCN: 🤍 Get exclusive GCN gear in the GCN shop! 🤍 Ex-Professional cyclists Dan Lloyd and Matt Stephens explain when and how to eat when out cycling. It's not as simple as it would possibly seem! The guys explain the two key considerations for your cycling nutrition strategy – Timing and Terrain. Timing can be made simple. If you're riding for more than an hour or an hour and a half, you will need to eat. Any less, you can probably do without. Use your training rides to work on a timing strategy that works for you. Some of us will need to eat more often when we're cycling, others might not need to eat so regularly on the bike. Terrain, again, can be made simple. Ask yourself: Is it difficult or dangerous to take my hands off the handlebars to eat here? If the answer is yes, then the terrain isn't quite right. If the answer is no, then you'll probably be OK to eat while you're cycling along. One thing that we need to emphasise is that it is OK to stop cycling to eat and that you shouldn't attempt to ride without your hands on your handlebars if that's illegal where you live. Ready made energy bars are perfect fuel for cycling, but if you want to make your own, here is the secret GCN recipe for Uber Bars! Click "Show more" for the full ingredients list. Subscribe to GCN: 🤍 Sunflower Oil - 120ml/3/4 cup Soft Dark Brown Sugar - 200g/1 cup Golden Syrup - 2 tbsp Peanut Butter - 1 tbsp Vanilla Extract - 1/2 tsp Melt these ingredients in a pan over a low heat until melted and mixed together. Next, add: Sesame Seeds - 25g / 2 tbsp Sunflower Seeds - 25g / 2 tbsp Flaked Almonds - 50g / 1/2 cup Sultanas - 50g / 1/2 cup Chopped Dates - 50g / 1/2 cup Gradually stir in thick cut porridge oats/oatmeal - 225g / 8 oz Transfer mixture to a baking tin lined with parchment. Roughly 25 x 15cm or 10 x 6 inches. Press down firmly with a metal fork. Place in an oven at 180degrees c, 350 degrees f or gas mark 4 for 10 - 15 minutes, keeping an eye on them so they don't get over done. Finally, leave to cool in the tin before you take them out and cut them. Enjoy! I use my ninja mega kitchen to do this but you can use any sort of blender I guess. This is like a meal but in liquid form it's easy to get down and tastes great also. During the rest of the ride I eat about 3 dates an hour I also use Gatorade powder in my water bottle and for really long rides I take out some extra electrolyte tablets there just easier to carry.

Juices are a great way to get all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals in fruit and veg without all the bulk. Here's how we make one of our favourites. Follow GCN on YouTube: 🤍 Juices mean that you can still eat a good carb heavy breakfast before a ride yet still take on board a load of goodness from fruit and vegetables. To make this particular juice, you will need: 2 medium-sized beetroots (beets for our american friends) (top and root removed) 2 medium-sized carrots (tops removed) 2 stalks celery 1 small piece of Ginger 1 apple 1 lemon 1/2 cucumber To make, simply pop all the ingredients into the juicer, adding the stronger flavours first. Add in lemon to taste at the end - though we find that you'll pretty much always need a whole one.
