Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world without a homeland of their own. Almost half of the world's Kurds live in Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Germany. Most are Sunni Muslims, but many adhere to other faiths. They have faced a long history of violent oppression and discrimination in the countries they live in and their attempts to set up an independent state have repeatedly been quashed. After World War One, they were promised their own state, which never materialized. The defeat of the Ottoman Empire resulted in the end of that opportunity for a Kurdish homeland. But the dream lives on. Subscribe: 🤍 For more news go to: 🤍 Follow DW on social media: ►Facebook: 🤍 ►Twitter: 🤍 ►Instagram: 🤍 Für Videos in deutscher Sprache besuchen Sie: 🤍 #Kurds #Kurdistan #DWNews
A Kurdish YPJ (Women's Protection Unit) sniper was filmed reacting after a bullet fired by an Islamic State (IS) group opponent narrowly missed her head. The video was filmed in the IS "capital" of Raqqa as Kurdish and Syrian forces, backed by a US-led coalition, seek to force IS out. The young woman is filmed laughing and exclaiming after her brush with death. She then tells the men with her to stop filming, saying: "Enough, enough filming." The Kurds are an ancient and noble people who are now the primary “boots on the ground” against ISIS in the Middle East. They are 35 million strong worldwide, the largest people group on earth without their own homeland. In this stirring talk, Stephen Mansfield tells the story of the Kurds and does so, surprisingly, through the lives of three women. Stephen Mansfield is a New York Times bestselling author who first rose to global attention with his groundbreaking book, The Faith of George W. Bush, a bestseller that Time magazine credited with helping to shape the 2004 U.S. presidential election. He has written celebrated biographies of Barak Obama, Booker T. Washington, George Whitefield, Winston Churchill, Pope Benedict XVI, and Abraham Lincoln, among others. Mansfield’s latest book, The Miracle of the Kurds, is a timely introduction to the Kurdish people that reached bookstores just as Kurdish troops began standing heroically against the evils of ISIS in the Middle East. The book has been named “Book of the Year” by Rudaw, the leading Kurdish news service. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at 🤍

It’s an unlikely place for a democratic revolution. The headline for this video has been updated. The previous version was: How Syria’s Kurds are trying to create a democracy. Watch more Vox Atlas: 🤍 Subscribe to our channel! 🤍 Since the start of the Syrian civil war, Kurdish people in the North have carved out an autonomous region of their own — Rojava — by fighting the Islamic State. Their militias, which form the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), have emerged as the most effective fighters against ISIS and won them a close partnership with the US. The ruling Kurdish Party, the PYD, has set up a democratic federation made of local governments. Their constitution claims to accept people of all ethnicities and religions and treat them as equals. One of its central tenets is equality of men and women. In fact, the all-female Women’s Protection Unit (YPJ) militia fights alongside the SDF, and they’re known to be especially good soldiers. But the more territory the Kurds take from ISIS, the more worried Turkey gets. Turkey has been at war with another closely linked Kurdish group, the PKK, for decades. In 2018, Turkey invaded the Syrian Kurdish enclave of Afrin, putting the country in direct conflict with the Kurds of Rojava. The Kurds are one of the world’s largest ethnic groups without a nation-state. Instead they are spread across four Middle Eastern countries, being a significant minority in each one. This has left them vulnerable to the centralising efforts of each government. Subsequently, Kurds across the region have complained about a lack of ability to express their cultural rights and autonomy. Not to mention, there have been several episodes of harsh repression against them. As a result, Kurdish resistance movements have cropped up throughout the last century; aiming to defend themselves and their cultural identity. The aims of these resistance movements have vacillated from outright independence to gaining greater autonomy. I first thought of it as an act of support to the protests in Iran that were triggered by the killing of Mahsa Amini (who was Kurdish by the way) back in 2022. As I already had a video about Persian, I decided to make this video on Kurdish and to donate the income from it. I haven't decided yet what is the most appropriate organisation, is it helping Kurdish refugees, or helping refugees from Iran, or helping all refugees, but I'll put it here when I make my decision. In the meanwhile, enjoy learning about Kurdish! Kurdish language is spoken in the region of Kurdistan by the Kurdish people - a largest nation that doesn't have a country. It is spoken across several countries throughout the Middle East and it has a very different status in each of those countries. Kurdish language may be spoken in the Middle East, but it is not related to Arabic or Turkish. Instead, together with Persian, it is included in the Indo-European language family, that contains also many Indian and European languages, including English. To assuage the outrage that followed President Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. forces from northern Syria, which exposed the Kurds — U.S. allies — to Turkish attack, he has made a slew of claims about the relationship between the Turks and the Kurds. Namely, that they have been fighting for hundreds of years. The reality of Kurdish activity, and both Kurdish and Turkish identity, in the region is much more complex. Their history is a complex saga of peace, suppression, resistance, cooperation and violence. Most of that violence is a result of relatively recent political tensions, and at times, it has been on behalf of the United States. The Turks and Kurds have not been fighting for hundreds of years, as Trump has claimed. But they do have a complicated history. To understand how the Turkey-Syria border became a conflict zone, we need to go back to the partition of the Middle East at the end of World War 1. The Fact Checker examines the complex history of Turkey, Syria, and the Kurds. Read more: 🤍 Subscribe to The Washington Post on YouTube: 🤍 Follow us: Twitter: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍

The Kurds are a people who inhabit the mountainous regions of southeastern Turkey, northwestern Iran, and northern Iraq. Kurds are believed to have originated in the Zagros Mountains in western Iran. The Kurdish people are ethnically and linguistically diverse, and their culture is rich and varied. The first written record of the Kurds is from the 6th century BC. At that time, the Kurds lived in the Zagros Mountains and adjacent areas. The Assyrians, who lived in the Tigris-Euphrates valley, invaded the Zagros region in the 7th century BC, and the Kurds were forced to migrate to the plains. #kurds #kurdistan #kobani

The first notable, historical mention of the Kurds is widely thought to be the Sharafnama, or The Book of Honour, by the medieval Kurdish poet Sharaf al-Din Bitlisi in 1597. Written by a Kurd about his own people, Sharafnama arguably put Kurdish culture and history on the map. A people who saw themselves on a par with Persians and Arabs had announced themselves to the world. The Kurds originate from the mountain regions of the northern Middle East and currently number between 25 million and 35 million and occupy an area spanning the borders of Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Iran and Armenia. They are the fourth largest ethnic group in the region - outnumbered by both Arabs and North Africans - and have a difficult relationship with other ethnic groups and countries in the region. The Kurds have anticipated, negotiated, warred and waited to establish their own permanent state since the First World War and the defeat of the Ottoman Empire. But they have been constantly disappointed, not least when Asia Minor was given to the new state of Turkey in 1923. In Iraq, a series of conflicts with different political regimes led to the announcement of autonomy after the First Gulf War in 1991, followed by the establishment of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in 1992. Their continued desire for independence from Baghdad led to a referendum in the Kurdish Region of Northern Iraq in September 2017. The result was overwhelmingly in favour of separation but the Iraqi government rejected the vote as unconstitutional. More recently, the Kurd-dominated state, the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria, faces upheaval in the face of President Donald Trump's call for the withdrawal of American troops from their mission to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS). There is a widespread concern for the tens of thousands of Kurds who have fought alongside the Americans and who would be extremely vulnerable without continued US support. As a result, Trump has threated to "devastate Turkey economically" if any harm should come to Syria's Kurds, post-withdrawal. This threat comes in the light of Turkey's aggression towards Turkish Kurds, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan branding the Kurdish militias involved in the fight against ISIL as part of so-called "terrorist" group, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). But the question remains as to whether the Kurds spread across the whole of the northern Middle East, in regions where they make up the ethnic majority in Iraq, Iran and Turkey, can realistically ever attain their own permanent, independent state or states. How could Kurdish Peshmerga forces join the Iraqi army in the fight against ISIL in western and northern Iraq but have their independence referendum declared unconstitutional and the subject of an economic and social backlash from the Baghdad government? In this film, we speak to key players and witnesses in the KRG independence referendum in 2017, to find out why they disagreed about the timing and continue to be so fragmented across their semi-autonomous region. The film tracks the history of the Kurds from their disappointment at the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, to the Iraqi Kurdish revolution of 1958 and the first Iraq-Kurdish war of 1961, Iranian revolution, the Anfal Genocide against the Kurds by Saddam Hussein's regime, the rise of ISIL and the fraught KRG-Baghdad relationship of today. Historically, the word "Kurdistan" is first attested in 11th century Seljuk chronicles. While there were a large number of disparate Kurdish dynasties, emirates, principalities and chiefdoms established from the 8th to 19th centuries. Iraqi Kurdistan first gained autonomous status in a 1970 agreement with the Iraqi government, and its status was re-confirmed as the autonomous Kurdistan Region within the federal Iraqi republic in 2005.There is also a Kurdistan Province in Iran, but it is not self-ruled. Iraqi Kurdistan is divided into six governorates, three of which are under the control of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Iranian Kurdistan encompasses Kurdistan Province and the greater parts of West Azerbaijan, Kermanshah, and Īlām provinces. Syrian Kurdistan is located primarily in northern Syria, and covers the province of Al Hasakah and northern Raqqa Governorate, northern Aleppo Governorate and also Jabal al-Akrad region. The major cities in this region are Qamishli and Al Hasakah. The Kurds are a people of Indo-European origin. They speak an Iranian language known as Kurdish, and comprise the majority of the population of the region – however, included therein are Arab, Armenian, Assyrian, Azerbaijani, Jewish, Ossetian, Persian, and Turkish communities. Most inhabitants are Muslim, but adherents to other religions are present as well – including Yarsanism, Yazidis, Alevis, Christians, and in the past, Jews, most of whom emigrated to Israel. Kurdistan today is almost equal to the size of Germany and the UK combined. Today’s 30 million Kurds constitute one of the world’s largest ethnic groups – without a country Kurdish identity encompasses many languages, including Sorani, Kurmanji and Zazaki. Kurdish identity includes many religions – Shiite and Sunni Islam, Yazidism, Chaldean and Assyrian Christianity and Judaism. The Kurds have political organizations in each of Kurdistan’s four parts. Kurds account for a fifth of Turkey’s population. Pan of of defendants at dock STORYLINE Prison guards under Saddam Hussein used to bury detainees alive and watch women as they bathed, occasionally shooting over their heads, a former female prisoner testified Monday in the genocide trial of the ex-president. Speaking in Kurdish through an Arabic interpreter, the 31-year-old witness recalled what she saw as a 13-year-old Kurdish girl who was detained during Saddam's offensive against the Kurds in the late 1980s. She was one of the day's four Kurdish witnesses to testify about alleged atrocities. The trial was adjourned until Tuesday. The woman, who testified behind a curtain and whose name was withheld apparently for fear of reprisal, said Iraqi government forces destroyed her Kurdish village in northern Iraq in 1988. She and some family members were imprisoned in southern Iraq. The woman said several relatives disappeared during the offensive against the Kurds, branded Operation Anfal. "The question I'd like to ask Saddam: 'I was a farmer, I was at my home what crime did I commit?" the woman said. Saddam and his six co-defendants sat quietly in court on Monday when their trial resumed after a 12-day break. They were not represented by lawyers. Chief Judge Mohammed Oreibi al-Khalifa had declared a recess after a stormy session on Sept. 26 in which Saddam and his co-defendants were thrown out of court. The judge said then he wanted to give the defendants time to convince their lawyers to end their boycott of the trial, or to confer with new ones.
